Cancers of the mouth and upper air and food passages (the oral cavity, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx and larynx), the salivary glands and thyroid account for about 6% of all human cancers
It is more common in men than in women. The ratio is about 3 to 1
It is more common in people over 50
Most common sites are the larynx (1/3 of case) the oral cavity (mouth and throat) and the pharynx
Usually arise in the mucous membrane which lines the airway and food passages
If detected in early stages these cancers are highly curable, more advanced cancers have a poorer prognosis
Improved methods of treatment and reconstructive surgery make the treatment of these cancers less devastating than in the past
Most patients can expect to resume a normal life
